Murphys Point Provincial Park Spring & Fall Camping

Trailer, kayaks & bikes all secured to the truck - check.  GPS zoned into Murphys Point Provincial Park - check.  Our spring weekend adventure begins.  This is the first of three visits to this park near Perth & Westport that we have done in the springtime.  Fall is lovely here with all the coloured leaves (see below pictures).  Spring brings wonderful wild flowers, bugs & snakes...however a great weekend all in all!!

Murphys Point is a hilly, scenic campground near Perth & Westport in Eastern Ontario and in on Big Rideau Lake. There is 177 campsites, some group hiking, great fishing & hiking trails. Small store with a few necessities & Ontario Parks merchandise.

May 22nd weekend we had an electricial site # 65. Most of the sites in the Hoggs Bay section are pull through sites. Pay close attention when booking about the pad slopes...some are quite severe and you most definelety need wood pieces or levelling blocks to level up your trailer as it is so hilly. But the views are wonderful!!! Site 65 is right across from the beach area and a small dock and childrens playground.  When checking in, the water fill station is quite awkward, as you have to exit to the left after you check in, drive out to find the dumping/filling station, and then come back through the park once you have your water!!! Hard for people to navigate the first time they are there and the staff working when checking in aren't always swift enough to let people know. The first fall weekend we arrived here, noone was working the gate house, and ended up just filling up with our large water jug via the water tap near our site as we didn't want to wind our way up and down and around to find the water!!!! That needs to be signed out much better for campers.

Fishing is great here - both spring and fall. Round Lake offers splake ( access through the group sites) and Big Rideau Lake offers Lake Trout, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. Pete was successful in getting some Lake Trout. This spring we were there opening weekend and there was a lot of fisherman out there at the crack of dawn trying to bring in the big one!!!

Hiking is fabulous at this park. There is an old mica mine on site, and they offer tours during weekends. This a  must to do for all ages and the hike there and back in leisurely. They do have some more strenuous hikes to do, but all offer great sites to see and worth the work out!
(Point Trail – 5.5 km loop, moderate; Sylvan Trail – 2.5 km loop, moderate; Lally Homestead Trail – 800 m loop, easy; Silver Queen Mine Trail – 2 km partial loop, easy, Beaver Pond Trail – 1 km, easy; McParlan House, Loon Lake Loop Trail, Trail to Lally Homestead, Rideau Trail – 1.8 km easy)

Kayaking is super here, as I would assume canoeing would be too, and there are rentals available for those that need them. I find this park great for children. The beach in the camping area is small but great and a super little playground area and large grass field to run around in. We never ventured to the day use beach but heard it was a great little beach area as well. But beware, snakes are a plenty here...thankfully we didnt stumble upon any durning our stays as it was was too cold May 22 weekend for them to come out and sun, and neither fall visit either!

Deers were everywhere, loons were constantly calling out on the lake, and lots of racoon visitors at night time if you forgot to take your garbage to the animal proof bins which were conveniently located near the washrooms spread throughout the campground!

Murphys Point Provincial Park is on our visit every year list. We enjoy a day trip to Perth or Westport if the weather is poor, or on route home. Foley Mountain in Westport is great to visit in the fall to soak in all the fall colours!!
